The Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit allows you to download digital photos from your digital camera to your Apple iPad.
There are two connectors in the Kit - the SD card reader allows you to insert your digital camera's SD Card into it - so you connect the card reader to the iPad, insert the SD card, and your iPad then opens the photo app, allowing you to select which photos you want to upload.
The Camera connector works differently - it has a USB post, which you need to connect to your iPad dock and then attach your digital camera to a USB cable to import the photos.
