Archos actually invented the portable tablet PC, and the Archos 9 is their latest version.

As you can see from the above list, the Archos 9 is more flexible than the iPad - the multi-tasking function will let you listen to music while you browse the web for instance. The built-in web-cam allows video conferencing. The browser can cope with Flash.
But the main benefit of the Archos 9 PC tablet is that it runs on Windows 7. This means that any software that can run on Windows 7 (which is most of the software produced in the world), can run on the Archos 9. There is no need for special aps to be created.
The downside is that because Archos are asking so much of their tablet, it doesn't run as fast as the iPad. If speed is important to you, then give this a miss and stick with the iPad. The battery life is also much lower than the iPad's.
